Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)
The music is horribly dated—Steve Stevens' "Power of Suggestion" oozes early 90's cheese—and even the credits are suspect, as director Tom Shadyac and producer James G. Robinson have probably done more cinematic harm than good in the last fifteen years. But it's still a wicked way to start a comedy. It's got a self-contained intro, made back when opening things with a mini-story was still novel. It's got Randall "Tex" Cobb, making the most of his gruff voice and grungy facial hair as usual. Most importantly, it's got Jim Carrey at his youngest and hungriest. Fresh from In Living Color, the Canadian comedian digs in to his first starring role with considerable fervor, well aware it might be his only shot at the big screen big time.
Mr. Staehling,
Did I see Dan Marino in the credits? The quarterback? Really?
